Popular in the 16th century, flat caps were worn by men and women of all stations of life.  They were made from a variety of materials, based on the wealth of the owner. Lower classes wore wool, while the upper classes wore hats made of velvet or brocade.  Fancier caps were trimmed with narrow braid, ribbons, feathers, and brooches.   Women would wear a flat cap over a biggins, usually pinned on.
